The organized garage is a myth. That space where you can tuck away your recycling bins and old electronics (and even a lawnmower or two) seems a mirage for most of us. If you’ve ever tried to organize your garage, you know the drill: You shove the bikes against the wall, throw the Christmas decorations in a box, and make space on the shelves for all your extra Tupperware lids. Lather, rinse, repeat. But despite tireless efforts, you know the whole thing will be a disaster again in three to five days.

Perhaps it’s time to rethink how you use your garage altogether. We’re here to share some tips to help declutter your garage and make it into a more functional space—not just something to hide all your junk. After all, your garage is a valuable resource: It’s prime real estate that you’re paying for whether you use it or not. So why not put it to good use?

(1) Empty it. Be ruthless about what stays and what gets tossed or given to charity. If you haven’t used something in the past year (or even two or three years), get rid of it. Don’t be sentimental about your clutter or belongings—especially if it’s just taking up valuable space and weighing down your system.

(2)Tackle the biggest mess first.

When you think about cleaning your garage, it’s often the most overwhelming part that comes to mind. As in, “Ugh, the garage is such a disaster; I’ll never be able to get it clean!” This typical thought process can quickly turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Do yourself a favour and focus on the bigger stuff first. If you’re cleaning your garage for the first time, don’t waste a lot of time on everything else in the garage because you won’t know where things go or where you should store them. Put all the large items together and sort through them first, then work on smaller items.

(3) Avoid Temptation

We already know that procrastination can be bad for your health. We also know that cleaning your garage is not as fun as watching Netflix. The best way to avoid the temptation for the former is to avoid the latter. If you want to achieve the task, remove everything that distracts you from the goal.

(4) Get the Right Tools and Supplies

The job will go much faster if you have all the right tools on hand. Before you start work, think about what you’ll be doing and check your garage to ensure you have everything you need. You can usually improvise, but it might cost you more time than you save.

Super Tip: Take into account what season it is and stock up on cleaning products that work best in the weather that’s currently happening- for example, spring is a great time to switch from your heavy-duty cleaners to your spicier ones and from your natural products to your heavier ones too.

(5) Prep. Give your garage a deep cleaning, and then make sure all the items you plan to store are organized and put away. You’ll want to remove everything from the floor and wipe down the walls. Create an inventory of what you have to store and label bins to keep everyone on the same page.

(6) Simplify your schedule

You’ve heard all the cliches, but simplifying your schedule is truly a game-changer. You’ll save time, money, and energy by planning things out. I keep mine in a notebook, but I’ve seen people use software and planners to help with this process.

  • Decide what day you want to do your chores.
  • Write down every chore you want to accomplish in the next month.
  • For each chore, decide on a frequency: Daily, Weekly, Monthly.
  • Next to each chore, write down how much time it will take to do it (this will help you keep track of what still needs to be done).
  • Decide when you’ll accomplish each task within the month.
  • Fill in the dates and times you’ve decided upon.
  • Set reminders on your phone or computer. Bonus points if you can set them for before you even start will help minimize procrastination.

(7) Paint it up

Update the paint on your garage walls and doors. Even if you’re not planning on painting the walls or floor, at least update the doors with a fresh coat of paint. The painting will give your garage a new look, even if it’s just a lick of paint. And go with a bold colour – that way, you’ll always feel motivated to look past what’s in there right now and see the possibilities ahead.

 (8) Consider hiring a cleaning service

So why would you hire a cleaning company in Alexandria, VA, to clean your garage? You’d be surprised.

Cleaning services are designed to clean, and they do it well. The staff is trained and equipped to handle a wide range of cleaning tasks. They arrive with everything they’ll need to get the job done right, so you don’t have to worry about doing any hard work yourself.

You’ll also benefit from special pricing deals, which means you don’t have to pay more than you need to get your garage clean. Some companies even offer extra deals on additions like post-cleaning deodorizing or providing supplies like gloves, brooms and dust masks.
